IECEx and ATEX address similar explosion hazards, but their document structures are not identical. A reliable purchasing check must account for that difference.
Start with the project requirement
Before reviewing any document, record what the project requires:
- Destination country
- Applicable legislation or certification scheme
- Gas, vapour, mist or combustible-dust atmosphere
- Zone and required EPL or ATEX category
- Gas or dust group
- Temperature class or maximum surface temperature
- Minimum and maximum ambient temperature
- Type of protection
- Electrical ratings and exact configuration
A genuine certificate does not make a product suitable for every hazardous area. Certification verification and equipment selection are separate checks.

How to verify an IECEx certificate
IECEx provides a central online certificate system. IECEx describes the online record as the controlled master version.
1. Request the complete certificate number
Do not accept phrases such as "IECEx compliant," "IECEx design" or "tested to IEC standards" as substitutes for an IECEx Certificate of Conformity. Request the complete number associated with the proposed equipment.
2. Search the official IECEx system
Enter the number in theofficial IECEx Certificate System. Make sure the Certified Equipment scheme is selected. A personnel certificate or service-facility certificate does not certify an equipment model.
3. Check the online status
The online record should display the certificate status. A saved PDF or printed copy is uncontrolled because the online record can be updated, suspended or cancelled.
If the status is not Current, stop the approval process and obtain an explanation from the certificate holder or issuing IECEx Certification Body.
4. Match the product identity and scope
Compare the online certificate with the quotation, datasheet and nameplate. Check:
- Certificate holder and manufacturer information
- Product type and model designations
- Included sizes, variants and suffixes
- Protection concept
- Equipment group and subgroup
- EPL
- Temperature marking
- Ambient range
- Standards and editions
- Current certificate issue
A certificate for one product family may not cover every entry arrangement, accessory, enclosure size or internal component.
5. Read certificate conditions and changes
A certificate number ending inXindicates that specific conditions of use must be reviewed. A number ending inUnormally identifies an Ex Component that requires further assessment when incorporated into complete equipment.
For a revised certificate, read the change history and confirm that the quoted configuration remains in the current issue.
How to review ATEX documents
ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU is an EU legal framework. The required conformity-assessment route depends on the equipment group, category and type of product. Not every ATEX product follows the same third-party route.
1. Request the correct declaration or attestation
For complete equipment covered by the Directive, request the EU Declaration of Conformity and check that it identifies:
- Manufacturer name and address
- Product and model
- Directive 2014/34/EU
- Applicable harmonised standards or other technical specifications
- Notified-body information where required by the conformity route
- Name, position and signature of the authorised issuer
- Place and date of issue
For an Ex Component, the applicable accompanying document may be an attestation of conformity rather than the same declaration issued for complete equipment.
2. Match the ATEX marking
Compare the documents with the physical product. Check the equipment group, category,GorDdesignation, protection concept, subgroup, temperature marking and EPL.
The exact model and configuration on the product must fall within the documented scope.
3. Verify notified-body claims
When a notified body is involved, check its identification number and authorised scope through the European Commission's NANDO information. A body may be notified for one EU act or assessment activity but not another.
Also determine which conformity module the notified-body number relates to. Do not assume that every number beside a CE mark is an EU-type examination certificate reference.
4. Understand the limit of public searches
ATEX does not have one central public master database containing every product document. Depending on the category and conformity route, an EU-type examination certificate may not be required.
The absence of a public product search result is therefore not automatic proof that an ATEX document is false. If verification remains uncertain, contact the stated notified body with the complete document reference.
Red flags that require further investigation
Pause the purchase review if you find:
- Different model suffixes on the document and quotation
- A certificate issued to a different legal manufacturer
- Missing schedules, annexes or conditions
- A cropped mark with no traceable document reference
- An older PDF that does not match the current issue
- Accessories or glands outside the documented configuration
- A component certificate presented as complete equipment approval
- An IECEx certificate that cannot be found in the official system
- A voluntary certificate presented as regulated ATEX conformity evidence
- A notified body with no relevant Directive 2014/34/EU scope

Current MMAIATEX certification status
MMAIATEX currently states that itsATEX, IECEx and CCC certification work is in progress.
Do not infer certification for a specific MMAIATEX model because the website discusses ATEX, IECEx or CCC. Buyers should request current model-specific information and independently verify any document supplied.
Call to action
Send the exact model, configuration, destination market and required documentation through theMMAIATEX contact page. State clearly whether IECEx, ATEX, CCC or another national approval is mandatory.
