Ex ec vs Ex nA: How to Read Legacy Equipment Markings

Ex ec vs Ex nA in one sentence

Ex ec is a current increased-safety Level of Protection documented in IEC 60079-7:2015+AMD1:2017 CSV; Ex nA is a legacy marking that can appear on equipment assessed to earlier editions of IEC 60079-15. The transition neither rewrites a certificate nor proves interchangeability.

What the current IEC catalogue actually shows

As reviewed on September 5, 2026, IEC 60079-7:2015+AMD1:2017 CSV is Edition 5.1, published August 4, 2017. Its public scope includes Level of Protection eb and Level of Protection ec, and associates ec with EPL Gc. The current IEC 60079:2026 Series still lists this Part 7 edition.

IEC 60079-15:2017 is Edition 5.0, published December 8, 2017. Its public scope covers Group II type n construction including nC and nR. It does not list nA. The same 2026 series still lists this edition as Part 15.

The Part 7 catalogue stability date is 2026 and the Part 15 stability date is 2027. A stability date is a maintenance milestone, not a product-certificate expiry date. It should not be converted into a claim that equipment became invalid on that date.

An official IECEx conference presentation from 2023 says that nA was integrated as ec in IEC 60079-7. That source helps explain the history, but it is a conference presentation, not a normative standard, decision sheet, certificate or permission to substitute equipment.

Why a legacy Ex nA item is not automatically invalid

Standards, certificates, legal approvals and installed-asset decisions have different lifecycles. A certificate to an earlier edition can remain in a status accepted by a scheme or destination market. Conversely, an old label does not prove current status, unchanged construction or installation suitability.

Start with the live certificate source. Compare certificate number, issue history, status, legal manufacturer, exact model and options, cited standards, marking, schedule and any special conditions. A seven-step review before selection or substitution

1. Freeze the exact product identity

Record the legal manufacturer, model, suffix, variant, supply data and certificate number from the quotation. Similar family names are not enough. A change in terminal arrangement, component option or enclosure can matter.

2. Open the controlled certificate record

Check status, issue number, change history and schedules in the official issuing system. Do not rely on an emailed PDF, logo, photograph or certificate for a similar model.

3. Preserve the cited standard edition

Record the edition printed in the certificate evidence. Do not replace it with the newest catalogue edition in a comparison sheet. The newer IEC 60079-0:2026 does not silently amend an older product certificate.

4. Compare the complete marking

Review protection concept, EPL, gas group, temperature class, ambient range and supply limits together. The EPL guide can help interpret Gc, but EPL alone does not establish compatibility.

5. Match the project and destination

Use the approved area classification, gas data, ambient conditions, environmental exposure and legal conformity route. IECEx evidence does not replace ATEX, UK, US, Canadian or another national approval path.

6. Review installation conditions

IEC 60079-14:2024 covers design, equipment selection, installation, initial inspection, documentation and competence. Cable entries, terminals, enclosure integration and special conditions can decide whether the proposed item is acceptable.

7. Separate installed assets from new purchases

For an installed legacy item, review condition, inspection record, modification history and current local acceptance. For a new purchase, use the protection concept and conformity route approved in the current project specification. IEC 60079-17:2023 covers user inspection and maintenance within its scope, but it does not verify equipment or authorize repair.

Can an Ex ec product replace Ex nA equipment?

Not from the marking alone. A replacement decision needs a documented comparison of the exact certificates, models, protection concepts, construction limits, electrical ratings, complete markings, installation instructions and legal destination. The responsible hazardous-area engineer and relevant manufacturer, certificate holder or conformity-assessment party should resolve any difference.

Likewise, do not replace specified Ex ec equipment with a legacy Ex nA item from a shared Zone 2 description.

What to include in the RFQ

  • destination market and required conformity route;
  • approved area classification and required EPL or category;
  • gas group, temperature class and ambient range;
  • exact Ex ec or permitted legacy-marking requirement;
  • legal manufacturer, model, suffix and option schedule;
  • certificate number, issue, status, standards and conditions;
  • supply, terminal, cable-entry and enclosure-integration details;
  • installation instructions and initial-inspection documents; and
  • written approval route for any proposed equivalent.

Current MMAIATEX certification status

The public MMAIATEX About page states that ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification work is in progress. Buyers should verify the exact model marking, current certificate status and scope, schedules, instructions and project requirements before selection or use.
