1. Is every panel-mount Ex push button complete certified equipment?
No. Some products may be complete Ex Equipment, while others may be Ex Components intended to be incorporated into a complete item.
The IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme overview distinguishes a Certificate of Conformity for a complete Ex equipment item from a component certificate. IECEx defines an Ex Component as a part or module that is not intended to be used alone and requires additional certification when incorporated into equipment or systems.
Ask for the exact certificate type and check whether the component carries conditions or a "U" suffix. A component certificate is not a certificate for the completed control panel.
2. Does an Ex push button make the whole control panel compliant?
No. A certified or assessed component can support a compliant design, but it does not automatically approve the enclosure, terminals, wiring, internal heat, cable entries, spacings, mounting method or complete assembly.
The finished panel must follow the applicable conformity route and be assessed as the complete configuration. The person or organization responsible for the final assembly must resolve component conditions and document the result.
3. What exactly should be included in the model description?
Record every suffix that changes the product or its approval. A useful description may include:
- Operating head or actuator type
- Body or module type
- Momentary or maintained action
- Contact arrangement
- Contact block quantity
- Supply voltage for an illuminated version
- Lens or button color
- Legend or nameplate
- Panel thread, cutout or fixing system
- Material and environmental option
Do not approve a product from a shortened family name when the certificate or data sheet identifies a more specific model code.
4. How do I choose momentary or maintained action?
A momentary push button returns to its normal state after release. A maintained or latching control remains in its changed state until it is reset or operated again. The correct choice comes from the machine-control philosophy and risk assessment.
Do not use actuator behavior as a substitute for the required emergency-stop or functional-safety design. Those functions can introduce additional standards, architecture and verification requirements beyond explosion protection.
5. Which contact arrangement is required?
The control circuit determines whether normally open, normally closed or multiple contacts are required. Confirm contact quantity, simultaneous operation, isolation needs and terminal arrangement.
The contact duty also matters. A low-current signal circuit, PLC input and directly switched inductive load can impose different voltage, current and utilization requirements. Use the manufacturer's rated values for the exact contact module and circuit type.
6. Can two push buttons with the same cutout be interchanged?
Not automatically. The same nominal panel opening does not prove equivalent thread form, anti-rotation detail, panel-thickness range, sealing, flamepath, mechanical retention, terminal clearance or certificate scope.
Compare the dimension drawing, installation instructions, exact mounting stack and component conditions. A convenient physical fit is not evidence of Ex compatibility.
7. Which hazardous-area information must match?
At minimum, compare the exact product documents with the project's:
- Gas or dust atmosphere
- Zone and required EPL or ATEX category
- Gas group or dust group
- Temperature class or maximum surface temperature
- Ambient temperature range
- Protection concept
- Destination-market conformity route

8. Does the component's IP rating become the panel's IP rating?
No. The complete enclosure rating depends on the installed interface, seals, panel wall, entries, cover, fasteners and all other openings. A component IP rating may apply only when it is installed exactly as instructed.
The guide IP66 vs Explosion Proof explains why ingress protection and Ex conformity must be checked separately. Consider corrosion, UV exposure, cleaning chemicals, washdown, vibration and impact where relevant to the project.
9. What should I check for illuminated push buttons and indicators?
Confirm supply voltage, AC or DC operation, permissible variation, color, light source, power, terminal arrangement and ambient limit. Also confirm whether the illuminated module and operating head are covered in the exact assessed configuration.
Do not combine an operating head, light module and contact block from different families unless the manufacturer documentation and applicable assessment explicitly permit that combination.
10. Which documents should a buyer request?
Request the current documents needed for the destination market and project. Depending on the conformity route and product status, this may include:
- Data sheet and exact ordering code
- Dimension drawing and panel-mounting details
- Installation and maintenance instructions
- Complete Ex marking
- Certificate or component certificate and schedule
- Conditions of certification or specific conditions of use
- Declaration of conformity when applicable
- Evidence for the supplied batch or serial identity when required

11. What information should I send with an enquiry?
