Class I Division 1 vs Zone 1 at a glance
The comparison below summarizes the structure in the United States using the current definitions in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.399. It is not a classification decision for a specific facility.

The word generally is important. Area classification depends on the release source, ventilation, material properties, process conditions and the rules adopted for the project. A buyer should never relabel a location by copying a row from a comparison table.
Why Division 1 is not simply Zone 1
OSHA defines Class I locations as places where flammable gases or vapors are or may be present in quantities sufficient to create ignitable mixtures. Under the Division system, Division 1 includes conditions where ignitable concentrations may exist during normal operation, may occur frequently during repair or maintenance, or may be released by equipment breakdown together with an electrical failure.
Under the Zone system, Zone 0 covers continuous or long-duration presence. Zone 1 covers likely normal-operation presence, frequent release during repair or leakage, specified breakdown conditions, and some adjacent Zone 0 conditions. Zone 2 addresses conditions that are not likely during normal operation and, if they occur, exist only briefly, plus other stated abnormal or ventilation-related cases.
Because the Zone system creates a separate Zone 0 bucket, the labels Division 1 and Zone 1 do not cover identical classification structures. The numbers alone cannot prove equivalence, and they cannot prove that equipment carrying one approval is acceptable under the other scheme.
OSHA rules when a US project uses Zones
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.307 permits employers to use the Zone system as an alternative to the Division system for Class I electrical and electronic equipment and wiring. The same section sets important controls.
Classification must be consistent
Each room, section or area is considered individually. Class I Zone 0 or Zone 1 locations may not abut Class I Division 1 or Division 2 locations. A Class I Division location may be reclassified to Zones only when all space classified because of a single gas or vapor source is reclassified.
OSHA also states that area classification and selection of equipment and wiring methods must be supervised by a qualified registered professional engineer. Procurement supports that decision with evidence; it does not make the classification from a supplier catalog.
Approval is a separate question
For OSHA-regulated workplaces, electrical equipment that requires approval must satisfy the applicable US approval route. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.7 defines a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory and its product-testing role. The current OSHA list of NRTLs identifies recognized organizations, but recognition alone does not show that an organization is approved for every standard or product category.
An IECEx Certificate of Conformity or ATEX document can be valuable international evidence, but it is not automatically an OSHA NRTL listing. The ATEX versus IECEx guide explains why destination-market acceptance must be checked separately.
Marking must be read as a complete identity
OSHA lists marking elements for equipment used in Class I Zones, including the class, zone, AEx symbol, protection technique, applicable gas group and temperature classification as applicable. It also allows specified protection techniques only in locations for which the equipment is approved.

International IEC Zones and US approval are different layers
IEC 60079-10-1:2020 covers classification of areas where flammable gas or vapor hazards may arise and supports the design, construction, operation and maintenance of equipment for hazardous areas. IEC 60079-14:2024 covers electrical installation design, equipment selection, installation and initial inspection.
Those IEC documents help define a technically coherent Zone project, but they do not erase national law or local approval requirements. A multinational project should keep at least three fields separate: the area-classification method, the product certification or listing route, and the installation code accepted by the authority or owner.
A procurement worksheet for either system
Before requesting a quotation, record these inputs from the approved project documents:
- destination country and authority or owner requirements;
- Class I Division or Class I Zone classification, without mixing the labels;
- gas or vapor identity and required group;
- temperature class and maximum permitted surface temperature as applicable;
- minimum and maximum ambient temperature;
- exact equipment function, supply, load and control duty;
- required protection technique and complete marking;
- required NRTL listing, IECEx certificate, ATEX documents or other regional evidence;
- cable-entry system, mounting, enclosure and environmental requirements; and
- required certificate issue, instructions, drawings and inspection records.

Current MMAIATEX certification status

For an exact model, obtain the current marking, certificate or listing record, issue, scope, conditions and instructions. Verify that evidence through the responsible official source and against the approved project classification before purchase.
