Why IEC 60079-17 inspection grades matter
IEC 60079-17:2023 applies to inspection and maintenance of electrical installations specifically designed for explosive atmospheres. It is Edition 6.0, published December 1, 2023. It addresses user-side installation integrity and does not replace product verification, general electrical inspection, room protection, gas detection or repair requirements under IEC 60079-19.
Inspection grade is not a quality score. It is the depth needed to reveal a class of defect. Using the wrong grade can produce two opposite failures: unnecessary opening and disturbance of sound equipment, or an inspection too shallow to reveal a safety-relevant internal defect.
Compare the three IEC 60079-17 inspection grades
The table is a practical paraphrase for planning. The licensed standard and project procedure control the exact checks.

Examples are not a universal checklist. A defect that is visible on one installation may require closer access on another. The equipment type, protection concept, mounting, environment and safe-access method all affect the planned grade.
Initial, periodic and sample inspection are separate decisions
The grade answers how closely an item is examined. The inspection type and extent answer when and how much of the installation is examined.

IEC 60079-17 addresses inspection and maintenance during operation. A periodic inspection examines equipment at planned intervals. A sample inspection examines a selected proportion to assess condition or help refine the program. Sampling is not permission to ignore known damage, abnormal events or equipment outside the sample.
Do not combine these concepts into a phrase such as annual visual inspection and treat it as universally sufficient. No single calendar interval or grade fits every hazardous-area installation.
Select grade and interval from evidence
A competent responsible person should consider at least these inputs:
- Area classification and the substances that create the hazard
- Equipment group, EPL or category, protection concept and certificate conditions
- Manufacturer instructions and equipment-specific limitations
- Environmental exposure, corrosion, vibration, contamination and mechanical damage
- Process duty, access frequency and likelihood of unauthorized intervention
- Previous inspection findings, failure history and quality of records
- Changes, repairs, shutdowns, incidents and abnormal operating events
- Applicable law, owner standards and site risk controls
The more severe the deterioration mechanism or uncertainty, the less defensible it is to rely on a superficial check. Conversely, opening equipment without a technical reason can disturb flamepaths, seals, terminals or fasteners. The inspection plan should balance detection capability with controlled intervention.
A defensible inspection workflow
- Confirm the current area-classification dossier and equipment register.
- Match each asset to its nameplate, certificate, schedule and instructions.
- Define inspection type, grade, extent and acceptance criteria.
- Assign personnel competent for the protection concepts and tasks.
- Plan isolation, permits, gas testing, access and reinstatement controls.
- Record equipment identity, checks, defects, evidence and responsible person.
- Classify actions and prevent unsafe equipment from returning to service.
- Close repairs through the applicable process and update the inspection plan.

Competence must match the inspection depth
The IECEx personnel framework separates competence by task. The IECEx Certified Persons Scheme overview lists units for maintaining Ex equipment, performing visual and close inspection, and performing detailed inspection. A training attendance certificate alone is not the same as demonstrated competence for a defined task.

Record what was actually inspected
An auditable report should not merely say passed. It should identify the asset, location, inspection date, grade, extent, reference documents, checks completed, findings, evidence, actions and responsible personnel.
Photographs can support a finding, but they cannot demonstrate every internal check or measured value. A checklist can improve consistency, but it does not replace technical judgement. If access was blocked, documentation was missing or a test could not be completed, record the limitation and the action needed.
Common planning errors
- Treating visual, close and detailed as pass grades
- Applying one grade and interval to every asset without risk evidence
- Calling a walk-through a close inspection when access was restricted
- Opening equipment without required isolation, tools or competence
- Using a generic checklist that ignores the protection concept
- Recording only pass or fail without asset identity and findings
- Treating inspection as product recertification
Current MMAIATEX certification status
The public MMAIATEX About page states that ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification work is in progress.
