Why Ex d flamepath inspection is product-specific
IEC describes flameproof enclosure protection as a construction and test method for Ex Equipment and Ex Components intended for explosive gas atmospheres. The joint geometry is part of that tested design. A visual resemblance to another enclosure does not establish the permitted joint type, dimensions, finish, fasteners, entries or repair method.
The public IEC 60079-1:2014 page identifies Edition 7 as the published flameproof-enclosure standard and notes that its corrigendum and interpretation sheet are included. IEC also lists IEC 60079-1:2026 PRV as a pre-release Edition 8 during voting through 4 September 2026. The exact certificate and manufacturer documentation decide which design evidence applies to the equipment being inspected.
Do not copy a gap, length, roughness or thread value from an unrelated guide. The inspector needs the exact product identity and the controlled information authorized for that model, joint and certificate issue.
Inspection, maintenance and repair have different boundaries

The official IEC 60079-17:2023 page says that Part 17 applies to users and covers inspection and maintenance of hazardous-area electrical installations. It expressly excludes repair, overhaul and reclamation, which are addressed by Part 19. The IEC 60079-19:2025 page says that Part 19 applies to service facilities performing repair, overhaul or reclamation of Ex Equipment.
Build the inspection record before opening the enclosure
Collect and verify these items before work starts:
- equipment tag, manufacturer, exact model, serial number and installation location;
- complete Ex marking, equipment group, EPL or category, gas group, temperature information and ambient limits;
- certificate number, issue, online status, schedule and any specific conditions of use;
- current manufacturer instructions, drawings available through the controlled route and approved parts information;
- area classification, isolation method, permit requirements and environmental conditions;
- previous inspection, maintenance, repair and abnormal-event records; and
- photographs that document condition without being treated as dimensional evidence.

A practical Ex d flamepath inspection sequence
- Confirm competent personnel, safe isolation, permits and the correct controlled documents.
- Record the enclosure and fastener condition before disturbing any part.
- Open the enclosure only by the approved method and protect joint surfaces from impact, grit and uncontrolled tools.
- Identify every flameproof joint type from exact-product records rather than appearance.
- Examine mating surfaces, threads, shoulders, spigots, covers, shafts and other relevant joints for corrosion, scoring, pitting, distortion, coating, debris or unauthorized work.
- Check that fastener type, grade, quantity, engagement and condition match the controlled requirements.
- Check cable entries, stopping plugs, adapters and seals against the certificate, instructions and installation design.
- Record measurements only with suitable calibrated tools and compare them with authorized limits for that exact joint.
- Classify every defect and decide whether it is acceptable maintenance, requires repair assessment or requires replacement.
- Reassemble, test, mark records and return to service only under the approved procedure.
This sequence is a procurement and work-control framework, not a substitute for the applicable standard or manufacturer procedure.
Stop-work conditions for a flameproof joint
Stop routine maintenance and escalate when any of these conditions is present:
- identity, certificate issue or controlled drawing cannot be established;
- visible pitting, scoring, cracks, deformation, fretting, corrosion or impact damage affects a joint;
- joint surfaces have been painted, plated, filled, ground, filed or machined without an approved process;
- threaded joints bind, show damaged threads or cannot achieve the documented engagement;
- fasteners are missing, substituted, stretched, corroded or of uncertain grade;
- an entry has been drilled, enlarged, rethreaded or fitted with an undocumented adapter;
- previous repair records are incomplete or a repaired part cannot be traced; or
- measured values conflict with the exact-product documentation.
The existing MMAIATEX FAQ on drilling or modifying an explosion-proof enclosure gives a conservative decision path. Never hide a defect with sealant, paint, abrasive dressing or an improvised gasket.
Choosing the repair path
The IECEx Certified Service Facilities Scheme overview explains that its service-facility certification addresses competence and quality systems for activities such as inspection, maintenance, repair and overhaul. IECEx also clarifies that a service-facility certificate is not certification of a particular repaired item or installation. Buyers must verify the facility's exact scope and still retain the item-specific repair report.
Before authorizing repair, ask for:
- the facility's applicable scope and current status;
- access to the necessary manufacturer and certificate records;
- proposed repair or reclamation method and the authority approving it;
- inspection and measurement results before and after work;
- replacement-part traceability and test records;
- repair marking and final report requirements; and
- a decision on whether the certificate holder or certification body must be consulted.

Current MMAIATEX certification status
The public MMAIATEX About page states that ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification work is in progress. MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. does not present this inspection guide, a representative image or a product-category description as evidence of completed certification, an approved repair method or suitability for a particular site.
Request current exact-model documentation. Verify product identity, certificate scope, joint information, instructions, repair history and the competence of the personnel or facility responsible for the actual work.
