Service-facility scope needs a live check

The Industry Insights guide starts with a narrow definition: an IECEx Certified Service Facility certificate concerns an assessed organization, location and service scope. It is not a blanket approval for every task, person or item that the organization handles.

The guide also records a current limitation that is easy to miss when reading a document list. On September 9, 2026, the official IECEx operational-documents page marks the Part 2 procedures for equipment selection and installation design and the Part 3 procedures for installation and initial inspection as under review and not for use. The IECEx FAQ explains that no IECEx Certification Body currently offers certification in the affected sub-schemes. Parts 4 and 5 address inspection and maintenance, and repair, overhaul and reclamation. The live IECEx certificate system and the exact scope remain controlling.

Inspection depth is not an interchangeable label

The Technical Knowledge guide explains the three IEC 60079-17 inspection grades in answer-first form. A visual inspection finds defects apparent without access equipment or tools. A close inspection adds defects that require closer access, while normally avoiding enclosure opening. A detailed inspection can require opening equipment or using tools and test equipment.

These descriptions help a buyer understand a work proposal, but they do not select the correct grade or interval by themselves. Equipment condition, protection concept, environmental exposure, previous records, access, competence and the applicable project rules all matter. The guide therefore links inspection depth to a written plan, identified equipment and traceable findings rather than treating a checklist as universal.

Twelve panel-meter questions turn a label into an enquiry

The FAQ begins with the measured quantity, input and displayed scale, then covers accuracy, dimensions, mounting interface, wiring, hazardous-area details, marking and documents. It also explains why an analogue scale is not automatically the same as the electrical input and why a matching face size does not make two instruments interchangeable.

IEC 60051-1:2016 supplies general definitions and requirements for direct acting indicating analogue instruments. The explosion-protection decision remains separate and must be supported by the applicable IEC 60079 requirements and exact-model evidence. That distinction prevents a familiar panel appearance from being treated as proof of a complete explosion-protected assembly.

A practical review sequence for project teams

  1. Start with the decision that the team must make: appoint a service provider, define inspection work or specify a panel meter.
  2. Freeze the legal entity, facility location, equipment identity, intended service or measurement function and destination market.
  3. Retrieve the current online status and full scope of any claimed certificate, including schedules and special conditions.
  4. Align the work or equipment enquiry with the site classification, protection concept, environmental limits and applicable project rules.
  5. Record who reviewed each source, the revision or issue used and any unresolved limitations before approval.

Buyers should verify the exact legal manufacturer, model and suffix, complete marking, current certificate status and scope, schedules, declarations where applicable, instructions and destination requirements before selection, installation or use.
