Explosion-proof lighting photometric data: questions before approval

This FAQ focuses on the document handoff between purchasing and lighting design. For the broader equipment-selection process, start with the explosion-proof LED lighting guide. The questions below are an editorial review aid, not a claim that MMAIATEX holds a particular test report or supplies a certified configuration.

1. What should a photometric data package identify?

It should let your reviewer connect the data to a defined product configuration. Ask for the complete luminaire reference, optic or distribution option, relevant operating setting, report reference and file revision. Request an explanation for any mismatch with the quotation. A broad family name alone is not a clear link between the item being purchased and the data being used.

2. Is a downloadable IES file a test certificate?

No. Treat it as exchanged calculation data and ask for its origin. The IES Computer Committee develops formats for lighting-calculation inputs and lists LM-63 among its documents. Importing a file successfully does not authenticate the manufacturer, establish the measurement history or verify explosion protection. Keep the file and the evidence explaining its identity together.

3. Which measurement reference can I ask about?

Ask which method, edition and conditions support the report. CIE S 025/E:2015 addresses reproducible LED photometric and colorimetric measurements and data reporting. Its scope includes quantities such as luminous flux and intensity distribution. A report should be reviewed against its actual stated method; this article does not certify a laboratory or reproduce the standard's test procedure.

4. Does the same wattage mean the same lighting data?

No. Matching one electrical value does not identify the complete optical configuration. Ask whether the quoted optic, cover and other relevant options correspond to the report and file. CIE treats photometric performance by configuration. If the supplier proposes shared or derived data, ask for the documented relationship and its limits instead of assuming that every model in a family has identical performance.

5. Should the file and report contain matching references?

They should be traceable even if their names are not identical. Request a short mapping from quoted model to tested configuration, report number and delivered file. Record the revision or issue date. If someone renames a file for convenience, preserve its original identity in the handoff record. A descriptive filename is useful, but it is not a substitute for that mapping.

6. Can I compare two quoted lumen values directly?

First establish what each number describes and under which conditions. Ask whether it is measured or derived, which complete configuration it represents, and what limitations accompany it. IEC 62722-2-1:2023 covers performance requirements and test methods and conditions for general-lighting LED luminaires. Its catalogue scope does not validate either supplier's particular value or make unlike reporting bases comparable.

7. Does a photometric file specify fixture spacing?

Not by itself. The designer also needs the actual space, task locations, mounting arrangement and project criteria. Send a current layout rather than only a floor area. Ask the designer to identify the input file and document the assumptions used in the calculation. Do not convert a catalogue illustration or a generic layout into an installation instruction for a hazardous area.

8. What happens if the selected optic or setting changes?

Flag the change before accepting the original calculation. Ask the supplier and designer whether the existing data still represents the proposed configuration and what evidence supports that conclusion. Keep an unresolved change visible in the review record. A substitution should not disappear simply because the new item retains the same family name or because an earlier calculation already looks satisfactory.

9. Does a good lighting calculation prove Ex suitability?

No. A lighting calculation and an explosion-protection review answer different questions. IEC 60079-0:2026 addresses general construction, testing and marking requirements for Ex equipment and components. Review the actual offered model's marking, certificate scope and instructions separately. The certificate-verification guide explains that separate evidence path; no photometric file replaces it.

10. Can a product photograph confirm the optical option?

Not reliably on its own. Use the photograph to orient the enquiry, then request a documented model and option reference. Do not infer a distribution, lumen value or tested configuration from the shape of the housing. Similarly, an image of a luminaire on this page does not establish what test data is available for that product or whether it is approved for your location.

11. What if the supplier has no matching file?

Record the gap and ask what documented information is available. The designer should decide whether that information is sufficient for the current stage, rather than silently substituting a file from an unrelated product. Distinguish a preliminary comparison from a final accepted design. If a matching file is a project deliverable, keep responsibility for providing and reviewing it explicit in the enquiry.

12. What should purchasing retain at handover?

Keep the accepted product reference, original supplied file, report or supporting reference, approved calculation and revision history together. Include the explanation for any accepted difference between the tested and quoted configurations. Store the separate Ex review with the package but do not merge its conclusion with the lighting calculation. That distinction helps the next reviewer understand what was checked and what remains unresolved.

A compact document handoff

Record Question it helps answer What it does not establish alone
Quotation and option list Which luminaire configuration is proposed? Measured optical performance
Photometric file and report reference What data supports the calculation input? Suitability for the actual hazardous area
Project lighting calculation What result follows from the stated inputs? Product certification or an as-installed verification
Model-specific Ex documentation What protection scope is documented? The workplace's achieved lighting performance

Source scope and current references

The official CIE page identifies S 025/E:2015. The IEC catalogue identifies IEC 62722-2-1:2023, edition 2.0, and IEC 60079-0:2026, edition 8.0, on the review date. The IES committee page is used for file-format context, not a claim that a particular file uses the latest revision. The purchasing sequence above is editorial guidance, not a mandatory checklist reproduced from these standards.

Current MMAIATEX certification status

MMAIATEX is the public brand of MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. On the review date, the company's About page describes ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification as in progress. This is an attributed website statement, not independent verification of a model's current certificate. Request the exact offered model's current documents before acceptance.

Safety disclaimer

This article is purchasing information, not a lighting design, hazardous-area assessment or permission to install equipment. Competent project reviewers must establish the applicable criteria and approve the actual selection and installation. No illuminance target, fixture quantity, spacing or equipment suitability is prescribed here.
