MESG vs flamepath gap: identify what the number describes
An enquiry may contain a material name, a gas-group reference, an enclosure description and several documents mentioning a gap. Those references do not necessarily describe the same thing. Before comparing numbers, ask what object was evaluated and what decision the document is intended to support.
The ISO catalogue for ISO/IEC 80079-20-1:2017 describes MESG measurement for gas-air and vapour-air mixtures to support equipment-group selection. On this review date, ISO lists the 2017 edition as published while also identifying revision work and a draft successor. A published edition and a developing replacement are different statuses; neither status supplies a dimension for an unidentified enclosure.
The corresponding IEC record identifies Edition 1.0 and notes that its copy includes the July 2018 corrigendum. Record the exact source and version used by the responsible reviewer. Do not replace a documented product decision with a search-result snippet about a substance.
Product drawings answer a different question
IECEx OD 017 is drawing and documentation guidance for manufacturers and testing laboratories preparing certification submissions. Its flameproof-enclosure section addresses constructional joint details, including flamepath length, maximum gap and constructional tolerances. Its scope also explains that this guidance does not replace the relevant standards.
That product-specific information is a different record from MESG material data. This is the basis for the purchasing distinction in this article, not a proposed formula linking the two. The existence of a material value does not identify which joint, drawing revision or accepted configuration applies to a supplied item.
| Record | What it describes | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| MESG source | A gas or vapour mixture characteristic obtained under specified test conditions | An acceptable dimension for a particular product joint |
| Product construction documentation | Identified equipment and its controlled construction details | The project's complete substance and application assessment |
| Certificate and associated conditions | The scope and limitations of the identified certification | That a similar-looking item or undocumented variation is included |
| Purchasing review record | Which evidence was considered for the offered configuration | Permission to inspect, alter or return equipment to service |
Keep the substance record separate from the product record
For the substance side of an enquiry, identify the material or mixture information supplied by the project, its source and the person responsible for confirming it. If different documents use different names or describe different compositions, record the discrepancy. Ask the competent reviewer to resolve it instead of choosing whichever entry appears easiest to match.
For the product side, identify the manufacturer, complete ordering reference, marking and relevant document revisions. Make clear whether the question concerns a proposed new item, an existing asset or an alternative configuration. That distinction helps the recipient locate the right documentation without encouraging the buyer to make an unsupported engineering judgement.
The Ex marking guide provides context for reading the separate parts of a marking. It should not be used to reconstruct missing product dimensions. A gas-group label is useful identification, but it does not turn a general article into the controlled drawing for a specific enclosure.
Ask a narrow documentation question
A useful enquiry states the uncertainty in words before attaching files. For example: the project material record uses a MESG reference, while a supplier attachment contains a joint drawing; please identify the purpose and applicability of each document. This is a hypothetical documentation question, not a report of a MMAIATEX project or an example of an acceptable design.
Ask the supplier to identify the document relevant to the offered construction and the route for obtaining any clarification needed by the responsible reviewer. Do not assume that every buyer is entitled to an unrestricted set of proprietary certification drawings. The objective is a traceable answer appropriate to the decision, not collecting the largest possible folder.
When reviewing certificate references, use the separate IECEx and ATEX document-verification guide. Keep the certificate identifier, document revision and offered item together in the enquiry record. If their relationship remains uncertain, leave the technical question unresolved.
Do not turn a source value into a maintenance instruction
An existing asset introduces a separate work-control question. Nothing in a material-data table authorises opening an enclosure, taking measurements, modifying a joint or accepting previous work. The flamepath inspection and repair-boundary guide addresses that separate lifecycle topic.
IECEx OD 009:2026 includes an example of a specific condition directing manufacturer contact when flamepath repair is necessary. It illustrates why the actual equipment conditions matter; it is not a universal repair instruction. HSE's explosive-atmosphere guidance also emphasises competent maintenance.
For procurement, record who owns the unresolved issue and which response is still needed. Do not relabel a missing acceptance basis as a commercial concession. A quotation can remain under commercial discussion while the technical disposition is still pending.
Sources and reading limits
The ISO and IEC pages support the material-characterisation scope and publication details. The current IECEx operational-document list identifies OD 017 Edition 7 and OD 009; their limited documentation points are used here. Catalogue descriptions and these short summaries are not substitutes for complete applicable requirements. No numeric MESG values, gap limits, test procedures or repair criteria are supplied.
Current MMAIATEX certification status
MMAIATEX is the public brand of MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. On the review date, its About page describes ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification as in progress. This is an attributed website statement, not independent confirmation of a product certificate. Verify exact model marking, certificate scope and current documentation for any proposed item.
Safety and legal disclaimer
This article is general purchasing information, not a gas-classification determination, equipment assessment, inspection method or repair instruction. Competent personnel must resolve the application and work controls using the applicable requirements and exact product documents. A photograph or an isolated numerical value cannot establish safe use.
