What the Ex q marking does and does not say
When supported by the exact product evidence, q identifies powder filling as the applicable type of protection. IEC 60079-5 supplies the protection-specific construction, test and marking requirements, while IEC 60079-0:2026 supplies general requirements for Ex Equipment and Ex Components.
Ex q is not a complete selection code. It does not, by itself, state the exact manufacturer, model, variant, equipment group, EPL, gas subgroup, temperature information, certified ambient range, supply rating or destination-market status. If an EPL appears in the complete marking and evidence, check what it means and whether it matches the engineering requirement. The Equipment Protection Level guide can help decode the term, but it cannot assign an EPL that is missing from the offered item's evidence.
Why 16 A, 1,000 V and 1,000 W are scope limits
The three numbers on the IEC public page describe the range of equipment to which IEC 60079-5 applies. They do not mean every item covered by the document is rated 16 A, 1,000 V or 1,000 W. A product may have much lower ratings, and its exact limits must come from the controlled product evidence.
The figures also do not prove circuit duty, temperature behavior, component capacity or suitability for a particular supply system. Passing below all three ceilings does not establish that an ordinary electrical device can be treated as Ex q. The protection must be part of an assessed design identified by its complete marking and documents.
Why the controlled design record matters
IECEx OD 017 Edition 7 is drawing and documentation guidance for manufacturers and Ex testing laboratories. It is not a replacement for IEC 60079-5. Its powder-filling section shows the kinds of design details that may need to be recorded where applicable:
Enclosure and filling definition
The guidance identifies enclosure construction and securing, material and thickness, particle material and size range, the filling process, measures for proper filling and the free volume of components with cavities that are not filled.
Electrical and interface definition
It also identifies capacitor data, cable-entry or bushing sealing, sealing used to achieve the degree of protection, maximum gap information, PCB trackwork and component layouts, coatings, component values and tolerances, distances through the filling, fuse current rating and thermal protection.
These items are not a do-it-yourself construction recipe. They show why visual similarity, a category name or an unchanged q suffix cannot confirm that two configurations share the same assessed design. A buyer may not receive every confidential drawing, but the certificate holder and certification process must be able to connect the supplied item to controlled evidence.
Gas scope does not prove dust suitability
The public IEC 60079-5 abstract is explicit that its powder-filling scope is intended for explosive gas atmospheres. It does not provide a basis for claiming combustible-dust suitability from q alone.
Where a project includes a dust hazard, the responsible team must use the applicable area classification, complete dust marking, certificate scope and installation requirements. A photograph of a sealed enclosure, an IP rating or a gas marking cannot substitute for that separate evidence.
Certificate and identity checks before purchase
The IECEx recognized standards page confirms that IEC 60079-5 is among the standards used by the equipment scheme. A standards page is not a certificate. Use the MMAIATEX guide to verifying IECEx certificates and ATEX documents as a navigation aid, then confirm the exact record with the issuing system or authority.
Organize the procurement review in three groups:
Identity and marking
- Legal manufacturer name and exact product or component identity
- Model, suffix, variant, option codes and complete Ex marking
- Intended atmosphere, group, EPL and temperature information stated for that exact item
Ratings and certificate evidence
- Actual supply voltage, current, power and other applicable electrical ratings
- Certified ambient range, certificate number, issue, current status, scope and schedules
- Every condition, limitation and configuration reference attached to the evidence
Instructions and change control
- Controlled installation, operation and maintenance instructions
- Drawings or interface information required for incorporation into finished equipment or an assembly
- Written confirmation that substitutions, options and revisions remain within the assessed evidence
A record for an Ex Component does not automatically establish conformity of the finished equipment or assembly. Every affected interface and limitation still needs to be resolved by the responsible parties.
A practical review sequence
First, define the atmosphere, area classification, required EPL, gas group, temperature limits, ambient range and electrical duty. Next, match those inputs to the offered item's full marking and actual ratings. Then verify the certificate identity, status, scope, schedule, conditions and controlled instructions. Finally, confirm the supplied configuration and every relevant assembly interface before installation approval.
Do not open, refill, alter or repair a secured powder-filled construction from a generic online description. If work could disturb the enclosure, filling, sealing or a safety-related component, follow the exact manufacturer instructions and certificate conditions and use competent parties under the applicable standards and law.
Current MMAIATEX certification status
The public MMAIATEX About page states that ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification work is in progress. MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. does not present this article, an IEC or IECEx reference, a q suffix, a product category, an IP rating or a representative photograph as proof that a particular product, component or assembly is certified.
Buyers must verify the exact legal manufacturer, model and variant, complete marking, current certificate status and scope, schedules, controlled instructions, destination-market requirements and site conditions before selection or use.
