1. Does IEC 60947-2 make an explosion-proof circuit breaker?
No. IEC 60947-2:2024 is the current circuit-breaker product standard within its published scope. It addresses electrical circuit-breaker requirements, not hazardous-area protection by itself. Ex suitability requires separate evidence for the exact finished equipment or assembly under the applicable IEC 60079 protection concept and certification or conformity route.
2. What is the current edition of IEC 60947-2?
IEC 60947-2:2024 is Edition 6.0, published September 18, 2024. The IEC 60947:2026 Series, published August 19, 2026, still includes IEC 60947-2:2024 RLV. The edition page shows a 2026 stability date, which is a review horizon rather than proof of withdrawal. Recheck the IEC catalogue before release.
3. What voltage scope does IEC publish for the standard?
The public abstract normally limits main-contact circuits to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC and describes an additional limited AC case up to 1,500 V. These are document-scope limits, not automatic ratings for an offered breaker. Use the exact datasheet, marking and controlled documents to confirm voltage, current, poles and application.
4. Is every circuit breaker suitable for isolation?
No blanket assumption is safe. The 2024 edition addresses suitability for isolation, but that does not mean every breaker provides that function. If isolation is required, request the exact manufacturer's declaration, applicable device marking, operating instructions and complete assembly information. Do not infer isolation from a handle position, padlock feature or marketing name.
5. Which electrical data should a buyer request?
Request the exact model and suffix, AC or DC application, rated voltage and current, pole arrangement, stated short-circuit performance, release or trip details, accessories, isolation claim where needed, ambient or derating data, and coordination evidence from the responsible designer or manufacturer. Avoid inventing breaking capacity, trip curve, selectivity or backup protection from a family photograph or incomplete sheet.
6. Can a fuse module or isolating switch be substituted for a circuit breaker?
Not by name or physical fit alone. A fuse, circuit breaker and isolating switch can serve different protection, switching and isolation functions. The completed design must satisfy every required function and rating. 7. Can an ordinary breaker be installed inside an Ex enclosure?
There is no universal yes. The finished equipment or assembly evidence must cover the actual breaker, enclosure, operating interface, terminals, entries, thermal behaviour, fault effects and instructions. IEC TS 60079-46:2017 addresses additional assembly aspects beyond individual certified items, under the assembly manufacturer's responsibility. Component evidence alone does not approve their integration.
8. Does an external Ex operating handle certify the internal breaker?
No. A handle or operating module provides an interface and may have its own construction or certificate evidence. It does not prove the internal breaker's electrical performance or the finished assembly's Ex conformity. Match the exact handle, shaft, breaker and enclosure configuration to controlled assembly documents and applicable certificate schedules before treating the arrangement as covered.
9. Does an IP rating prove hazardous-area suitability?
No. IP ratings and explosion-protection evidence answer different questions. An IP code concerns ingress protection under its applicable standard, while Ex suitability depends on the complete protection concept, marking and conformity evidence. 10. Which Ex documents should be checked?
Check the exact manufacturer and model, complete Ex marking, current certificate and schedules where applicable, special conditions, controlled enclosure or assembly configuration, instructions, declaration or destination-market approval, and consistency with the breaker datasheet. 11. What temperature evidence matters for the finished design?
Use documented ambient limits, temperature class or maximum surface temperature, internal heat-loss assumptions, loading conditions and certified configuration limits. Do not infer temperature performance from enclosure dimensions or breaker current alone. The finished arrangement must remain within the evidence for its protection concept, component combination and intended use, including any stated derating or installation conditions.
12. Who approves the final circuit-breaker selection?
The responsible project parties and competent persons must validate the actual circuit, fault duty, hazardous-area classification, finished Ex evidence, installation design and local rules. IEC 60079-14:2024 covers design, selection, installation and initial inspection within its scope. A supplier article, product photo or generic checklist cannot approve an installation.
