IEC 62208 Empty Enclosures: What Ex Buyers Must Check

Last reviewed: October 19, 2026

Image note: The representative photograph shows an open control enclosure with a component already fitted. It is not an empty-enclosure test specimen or proof of IEC 62208 compliance. Verify exact model marking, certificate scope and current documentation.

IEC 62208 empty enclosures: identify the boundary

The IEC 62208:2023 publication page describes the enclosure as supplied by its manufacturer before incorporation of switching and control components. Its general scope covers enclosures intended for low-voltage assemblies, for indoor or outdoor general use. The page identifies edition 3, published on June 1, 2023.

The scope refers to assemblies with rated voltages not exceeding 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC. Those limits describe the standard's scope. They are not a voltage rating for an enclosure or control box offered by MMAIATEX, and they must not be copied into a product specification as such.

For a quotation review, underline the supplied item's description. Does the price cover a housing, a housing with specified accessories, or a populated control station? If two quotations use the word enclosure for different deliveries, the standard number alone will not make them comparable.

Separate housing, assembly and explosion-protection evidence

These three review levels answer different questions. The table is an editorial aid for organising a purchase, not a conformity-assessment procedure.

Evidence level What the buyer is trying to identify What must not be inferred
Empty enclosure The housing configuration addressed by the supplier's enclosure documents Approval of every circuit later fitted inside
Completed assembly The offered arrangement, devices, interfaces and applicable verification basis Hazardous-area suitability from an assembly standard alone
Explosion protection The exact equipment or component identity, marking and applicable Ex documentation Coverage based only on shape, material or a catalogue category

The IEC 61439-1:2020 overview addresses low-voltage assembly characteristics and verification. It explains that assembly conformity uses the relevant product part of the series together with the applicable general rules. Do not describe Part 1 alone as a universal certificate for any populated box.

Separately, IEC 60079-0:2026 concerns general construction, testing and marking requirements for Ex Equipment and Ex Components. The different scope explains why a reference to IEC 62208 cannot itself establish explosion protection. The applicable protection-specific requirements and product documents still need competent review.

Compare offers by the delivered configuration

Consider a hypothetical purchasing comparison. Offer A describes a housing and its mounting accessories. Offer B describes a control station with operators and internal components. Both mention an enclosure standard. Comparing only their dimensions, material and standard references would conceal the different deliverables.

A useful clarification asks each supplier to identify the ordered configuration and the documents covering it. Keep an enclosure drawing separate from the final arrangement drawing when they describe different stages. Likewise, distinguish an accessory included in the delivery from an accessory merely shown in a catalogue image.

For product discovery, browse the controller housings and control-box listings. That category currently contains housing and assembled-product descriptions, making the delivery distinction relevant. The listing is a starting point for questions, not confirmation of IEC 62208 compliance, stock or a particular certificate.

The existing control-station buyer FAQ covers the wider function schedule. This guide addresses the narrower problem of understanding the enclosure-standard reference within that offer.

Build a delivery-boundary worksheet

Use a short worksheet beside the quotation. The entries below are original purchasing suggestions; they are not a mandatory IEC form.

  1. Name the deliverable. Record the exact housing or complete-product reference and which document defines the delivery contents.
  2. List included interfaces. Identify the documented cover, mounting arrangement, openings and supplied accessories without assuming that unlisted options are included.
  3. Map the evidence. Note whether each drawing, declaration or report addresses the enclosure, an individual component or the complete offered arrangement.
  4. Identify the next responsible party. Establish who will define and review any incorporation work that remains outside the quoted delivery.
  5. Keep unresolved scope visible. Write the actual unanswered question rather than replacing it with a generic compliant label.

IEC TR 61439-0:2022 provides specifier-facing guidance on assembly characteristics and application details. Its existence reinforces the distinction between choosing a housing and defining an assembly. This article's worksheet is not a reproduction of that report, and it cannot replace the applicable technical specification.

Do not turn a component document into housing approval

Some enclosure-related offers also include documents for Ex Components. That classification requires its own review. The word empty does not automatically establish legal component status, and the word component does not tell the buyer which housing configuration a report covers.

Use the separate ATEX component-attestation guide when the issue concerns an attestation and incorporation information. Keep that question distinct from the scope of IEC 62208. A purchasing file may contain both types of evidence, but their presence is not permission to combine unreviewed parts.

If the offer changes after clarification, retain the earlier version and identify the changed delivery contents. Ask the responsible reviewer which documents require reconsideration. Do not carry forward an acceptance note simply because the housing photograph looks unchanged.

Source scope and reading limits

The linked IEC catalogue pages were checked on October 19, 2026. They support the standard-scope distinctions above, not a claim that a particular product has passed testing. Detailed requirements, applicable editions and project acceptance need the licensed standards and controlled product documents. No test method, machining instruction or assembly design is provided here.

Current MMAIATEX certification status

MMAIATEX is the public brand of MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. On the review date, its About page describes ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification as in progress. This is an attributed website statement, not independent certificate verification. Check the exact model, marking, certificate scope and current documentation before acceptance.
