Ex pxb vs Ex pyb vs Ex pzc at a glance
IEC 60079-2:2014 gives construction and test requirements for electrical equipment using pressurized enclosure protection p in explosive gas or dust atmospheres. On September 10, 2026, Edition 6.0 remained the Part 2 publication listed in the IEC 60079:2026 series, and its July 2015 corrigendum was incorporated into the publication.

The mapping above is limited to the public, high-level evidence in the IECEx protection-techniques material. Pxb and pyb share an EPL mapping, but they are not interchangeable codes. Their construction and internal-equipment premises must be checked in the licensed standard and exact certificate schedule. Pzc cannot be substituted wherever pxb or pyb was specified.
Dust pressurization uses pb and pc terminology. Do not reuse the gas table for a combustible-dust selection.
Pressurized does not mean merely sealed
A pressurized enclosure maintains a protective-gas condition so that the external explosive atmosphere is prevented from entering in the manner assumed by the certified design. A gasket, IP rating or positive pressure observed on a gauge does not by itself establish Ex p protection.
Two functions must also remain distinct:
- Purging replaces the enclosure atmosphere to the extent and under the conditions defined for the design before equipment that depends on the protection is energized.
- Maintaining pressurization preserves the required protective condition during operation and makes the defined protective response available if that condition is lost.
Neither function should be reduced to a generic timer or pressure switch setting. Enclosure volume, leakage, protective-gas supply, internal equipment, openings, monitoring architecture and certificate conditions all affect the controlled solution.
Why the shared Gb mapping does not make pxb and pyb equal
The letters after p identify a specific protection level, not just a target Zone. A buyer may see Gb beside both pxb and pyb and assume either marking can satisfy the same purchase line. That conclusion is unsafe because the suffix interacts with what is installed inside the enclosure and how the certified system prevents ignition if the protective condition is not present.

Do not infer the internal-equipment rules for pxb, pyb or pzc from another protection concept. For example, the Ex db vs Ex eb guide concerns different construction principles and cannot approve an Ex p assembly.
Protective-gas and monitoring evidence needed
An Ex p enquiry should identify the complete protective arrangement, not only the enclosure dimensions. Ask the supplier and responsible designer to document:
- Protective-gas type, quality and source
- Supply reliability and the permitted operating range
- Monitoring locations and the variables actually measured
- Purge-control logic and the conditions required before energization
- Alarm, interlock, disconnection or other response for each relevant loss condition
- Enclosure leakage assumptions and the treatment of doors, covers and routine openings
- Cable entries, ducts, vents and other interfaces that affect the protective condition
- Internal electrical equipment and any item that depends on pressurization for protection
- Heat dissipation, temperature limits and certified ambient range
- Any normal or abnormal internal release addressed by the certified design
The values and responses must come from the exact assessed design. This guide deliberately gives no universal pressure, purge volume, purge duration or trip delay because a reusable number could conflict with the certificate or create an unsafe energization sequence.
Record the response to loss of pressurization
A phrase such as alarm on low pressure is incomplete. The design record should state what is detected, which equipment remains energized or is disconnected, whether operator action is required, and how restart is prevented until controlled conditions are restored.
Trace that decision to the protection level, internal equipment, area classification, certificate schedule, instructions and site operating philosophy. Define a test method and acceptance record. A workshop demonstration does not prove the installed response.
Limited internal release and scope exclusions
IEC 60079-2 also addresses pressurized enclosures with a limited internal release of a flammable substance. That is a specific assessed condition, not permission to route an arbitrary flammable process stream through a cabinet. The substance, release source, containment, dilution, temperature and protective response require exact design evidence.
The public scope excludes oxygen-enriched containment release, pressurized rooms and analyser houses, explosives and pyrotechnics, hybrid mixtures, pyrophoric substances, and internal combustible-dust release. Near these boundaries, obtain specialist review under the applicable requirements.
Certificate, marking and instruction checklist
Before approving a pressurized enclosure, match these records to the offered configuration:
- Legal manufacturer, exact model and every option or suffix
- Complete Ex marking, including pxb, pyb or pzc, group, temperature information and EPL
- Current certificate status, scope, schedule, drawings and special conditions
- Protective-gas specification, supply limits, purge logic and monitoring details
- Loss-of-pressurization response and permitted internal equipment
- Ambient range, heat-load assumptions and environmental limitations
- Enclosure openings, cable entries, vents, ducts and installation interfaces
- Installation, commissioning, testing, operation and maintenance instructions
- Destination-market declarations and other required conformity documents

Procurement and installation handoff sequence
First, the responsible designer supplies the area classification, required EPL, substance data, ambient conditions and electrical duty. Second, the manufacturer defines the complete Ex p configuration and protective-gas system. Third, procurement matches the quote and documents to that configuration. Fourth, competent installers follow the certified interfaces and instructions. Finally, commissioning verifies the purge, monitoring, responses and records before service.
Changing an internal component, entry, enclosure opening, monitoring device or control sequence can change the assessed configuration. Treat any proposed deviation as an engineering and conformity-review input, not as a routine site adjustment.
Current MMAIATEX certification status
The public MMAIATEX About page states that ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification work is in progress. MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. does not present this article, an Ex p suffix, an IP rating, a product category or a representative photograph as proof that a particular pressurized enclosure or assembly is certified.
Buyers must verify the exact legal manufacturer, model and suffix, complete marking, current certificate status and scope, schedules, declarations where applicable, special conditions, instructions, destination-market rules and site conditions before selection or use.
