Explosion-proof terminal block selection starts with two evidence layers

The buyer first checks whether the terminal performs the required ordinary connection function. The buyer then checks whether the exact terminal and its installed configuration have the applicable explosion-protection evidence. One layer cannot replace the other.

The public scope of IEC 60947-7-1:2025 includes terminal blocks and test-disconnect terminal blocks with screw or screwless clamping units, fixed to a support, for mechanical and electrical connection between copper conductors. The public scope of IEC 60079-7 Edition 5.1 covers increased-safety e electrical equipment and Ex Components for explosive gas atmospheres. It includes connections and conductors within the stated levels of protection.

On this review date, the IEC catalogue displays a 2026 stability date for IEC 60079-7:2015+AMD1:2017 Edition 5.1. A stability date is a maintenance milestone, not a certificate expiry date. Buyers should recheck the official catalogue and the exact controlled project documents when using this guide later.

1. Is every IEC 60947-7-1 terminal block suitable for an explosive atmosphere?

No. IEC 60947-7-1:2025 establishes requirements for the general terminal-block function within its scope. It is not an explosion-protection certificate. Hazardous-area use needs separate evidence for the exact terminal and configuration, including the complete Ex marking, certificate status, schedule, conditions and controlled instructions. A catalogue statement or standard number cannot substitute for that evidence.

2. Which IEC standards should a buyer compare for an Ex terminal block?

Start with IEC 60947-7-1:2025 for the ordinary industrial terminal-block scope. Then check the applicable IEC 60079 protection standard. For an increased-safety design, IEC 60079-7 is relevant together with the current general requirements in IEC 60079-0:2026. Other protection concepts may use different standards. The certificate and equipment instructions must identify the actual route.

3. What do Ex eb and Ex ec evidence mean for connections and conductors?

IEC 60079-7 identifies level of protection eb with EPL Mb or Gb and ec with EPL Gc. Its public scope includes connections and conductors, but those codes are not a complete selection answer. Buyers still need the full marking, group, temperature information, ambient range, certificate, schedule, conditions and installed configuration for the exact item. An eb or ec label viewed in isolation does not approve a site.

4. Is a standard scope ceiling the rating of every terminal block?

No. The IEC 60947-7-1 public scope reaches from 0.05 mm2 or 30 AWG to 300 mm2 or 600 kcmil, and covers circuits up to 1,000 V AC at frequencies not exceeding 1,000 Hz or 1,500 V DC. These are outer limits of the document, not automatic product ratings. Likewise, the voltage ceilings stated in IEC 60079-7 describe the standard scope. Only the exact product record supplies its usable conductor, current and voltage limits.

5. Is an Ex Component certificate enough for a complete junction box or panel?

No. An Ex Component certificate can define the assessed component and its conditions, but integration can create additional spacing, quantity, loading, temperature, wiring and enclosure questions. IEC TS 60079-46:2017 publicly describes assembly aspects beyond individual item certificates under the assembly manufacturer's responsibility. The finished equipment needs its own documented assessment and applicable conformity route.

6. Why must the exact type and suffix match the certificate schedule?

Small suffix changes can identify a different conductor range, terminal function, colour, accessory set, level arrangement or assessed condition. A visually similar device is not proof of equivalence. Match the manufacturer's exact name, type, suffix, revision and certificate schedule. If the supplied marking or packing reference differs from the controlled record, resolve the discrepancy before assembly or acceptance.

7. Which conductor details must be confirmed?

Confirm conductor material, solid or stranded form, cross-section, number of conductors per clamping point, insulation preparation and any approved ferrule or lug. Use the exact terminal instructions for strip length, insertion method and preparation. Do not transfer values from a neighbouring size or a visually similar terminal. 8. Why do torque, strip length, ferrule and tool instructions matter?

These details affect the intended electrical and mechanical connection. Too little or too much tightening, exposed conductor, damaged strands or an unlisted preparation can depart from the assessed arrangement. There is no safe universal torque or strip length. Record the exact manufacturer instruction revision, approved tool where specified, conductor preparation and inspection method for the model being installed.

9. Can jumpers, end plates, separators or markers be substituted freely?

No. Accessories can affect spacing, grouping, identification, creepage, clearance, terminal arrangement or certificate conditions. Use only accessories permitted by the exact controlled documentation. A matching pitch or colour does not establish suitability. Record part numbers and positions in the assembly schedule, and treat an unlisted substitute as an engineering and conformity question before use.

10. How should loading and temperature evidence be checked in an assembly?

Check the exact terminal current and voltage data, conductor loading, terminal count, grouping, ambient range, internal temperature assumptions and finished-equipment limits. The enclosure's external temperature marking or IP rating does not answer every internal thermal question. The responsible assembly designer must use controlled evidence for the actual configuration rather than multiplying a single-terminal rating across a full rail.

11. Can a photograph, colour, IP rating or enclosure label prove terminal certification?

No. Appearance can help identify what to inspect, but it cannot establish conductor compatibility, Ex status or certificate scope. An enclosure IP rating addresses ingress protection and does not certify a terminal. 12. Who is responsible for final selection and installation?

The parties responsible for equipment design, assembly, hazardous-area engineering and installation must validate the complete configuration under applicable law, standards, certificates and instructions. The assembly manufacturer remains responsible for the finished equipment within its conformity route, and competent project personnel must approve site selection and installation. A supplier article cannot perform area classification, engineering approval or statutory verification.
