IEC 60204-1 machine electrical scope starts with the machine
The IEC 60204-1 consolidated publication covers electrical, electronic and programmable electronic equipment for machines that are not hand-portable during operation, including coordinated groups. Its stated boundary starts at the supply connection to the machine's electrical equipment. The catalogue identifies IEC 60204-1:2016+AMD1:2021 CSV, edition 6.1, published September 15, 2021.
For purchasing, the first question is therefore which machine or coordinated group the supplied documents describe. Do not infer that identity from a cabinet nameplate or a drawing filename. The discussion below is an original enquiry method, not a reproduction of the standard's technical requirements.
One cabinet is not necessarily the whole document set
Consider a hypothetical machine described as having a main control cabinet, a separate operator station and several field devices. The cabinet supplier provides a drawing for its own item. The machine builder provides a different drawing showing the wider arrangement, but the operator-station reference does not match the quotation.
The problem is not resolved by receiving another copy of the cabinet document. The buyer needs a clear relationship between the two drawings and the offered station. Otherwise, each party may be discussing a different arrangement while using the same machine name.
This example is not a reported MMAIATEX project. It illustrates a system-documentation gap, not an unsafe circuit diagnosis. A buyer can identify the mismatch and request clarification without deciding how the equipment should be connected or operated.
Browse the listed controllers and control boxes to identify a product-family reference for the enquiry. The category does not establish that the supplier provides the whole machine, its integration work or a machine-level assessment.
Locate the interface in the project record
Use the table to name the missing relationship. These are editorial questions for correspondence, not a mandatory IEC checklist or instructions for selecting connection points.
| Interface being discussed | Relationship to locate in project records | Clarification when it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Machine supply connection | The machine boundary identified by the responsible project drawing | Which drawing and revision identify the boundary used for this review? |
| Separate operator station | The offered station reference linked to the machine arrangement | Who will reconcile the station designation across the quotation and drawings? |
| Field-device interface | The identified device or interface linked to the relevant system record | Which document describes this interface, and who supplies the unresolved information? |
| Connection between coordinated machines | The stated extent of the group under discussion | Which items and interface records belong to this particular machine-group review? |
A note saying by others should identify an actual handover question, not end the discussion. Ask the project parties who supplies the missing information and who incorporates it into the machine record. This request clarifies responsibility; it does not automatically assign integration work to the seller of a control box.
Agree the drawing handover in three steps
First, identify the record that describes the machine arrangement. Ask for its document reference, revision and the machine identity it uses. If the record is not yet available, retain that status explicitly instead of presenting a local cabinet drawing as its replacement.
Second, connect each relevant supplier document to that record. Preserve the supplier's actual item designation rather than replacing it with an informal project nickname. If two identifiers refer to the same item, ask the responsible party to document the relationship; do not assume equivalence because the photographs look alike.
Third, agree who will receive and resolve each open interface question. Record the information requested and the document expected to carry the response. A reply can provide useful component information while leaving the machine-level drawing relationship unfinished. Keep those two outcomes separate.
This handover need not become a large new form. A short, controlled correspondence record attached to the relevant drawing can be enough to keep the unresolved relationship visible. Its purpose is to prevent an unanswered interface from disappearing between separate suppliers' document packages.
Revisit the relationship when an item changes
Suppose the operator-station designation in the hypothetical example changes after a quotation revision. Updating the purchase line alone does not explain whether the machine drawing describes the revised item. Ask which linked records need review and who will issue the coordinated update.
Retain the earlier designation and the reason for the change so the reviewer can follow the correspondence. Do not erase the open question by relabelling an older document. This is document control advice, not permission to substitute a component, alter control logic or change the machine's wiring.
Keep the Ex question separate without losing item identity
IEC 60079-0:2026, edition 8 published June 16, 2026, concerns general construction, testing and marking of Ex equipment and components. A machine-level electrical reference does not by itself establish the exact item's explosion-protection evidence. Conversely, an Ex document for a control box does not identify every interface in the machine arrangement.
Keep the same offered-item reference available to both reviews, but do not merge their conclusions. The control-station buyer FAQ addresses station-specific functions, entries and documentation. The empty-enclosure guide addresses housing and supplied-assembly boundaries. Neither replaces the machine-wide drawing relationship discussed here.
Source limits and current certification status
The linked public catalogue pages were reviewed on October 21, 2026. They support the limited scope descriptions above, not a full applicability decision, detailed compliance procedure or instruction to use a particular edition on every project. Use the applicable complete standards and controlled project documents for the responsible technical review.
MMAIATEX is the public brand of MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. Its About page describes ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification as in progress on the review date. This is an attributed website statement, not independent certificate verification or a claim of completed machine conformity.
Safety and legal disclaimer
This guide concerns purchasing questions and document handover. It is not machinery design, legal advice, a functional-safety assessment or installation approval. Competent project parties must determine the requirements for the actual arrangement. Do not open, wire, energise or modify equipment based on this article.
