IEC 60598-1 luminaire safety: identify the general reference
The IEC 60598-1:2024 catalogue record describes general safety requirements for luminaires with electric light sources and supply voltages up to 1000 V. IEC lists edition 10, published November 6, 2024. That identifies the publication; it does not establish which edition governs a particular purchase or whether an offered model complies.
For the buyer, the immediate task is to connect the reference to an identifiable item. A line saying "IEC 60598" leaves the part and edition unstated. A more detailed reference can still be incomplete if the quotation does not identify the luminaire variant it describes. Resolve both ambiguities before treating competing quotations as equivalent.
Browse the listed industrial luminaires and floodlights to identify a family for your enquiry. The catalogue is a starting point for that conversation, not proof that each listed item has the same construction, assessment or documentation.
A particular standard can carry a different year
IEC publishes IEC 60598-2-5:2015 for particular floodlight requirements. Its catalogue identifies edition 3, published August 6, 2015. The separate IECEE Test Report Form 60598-2-5H:2025, published September 4, 2025, expressly pairs that 2015 reference with IEC 60598-1:2024.
This is a useful counterexample to the assumption that the years on a general and particular standard must match. It is not permission to select arbitrary editions. Equally, the published form is not a completed test report and says nothing about the conformity of an MMAIATEX product.
Ask the supplier to identify the combination actually used in the supporting assessment and explain its relationship to the offered item. If a document uses another combination, retain its exact references for the responsible reviewer. Do not rewrite the document's dates to make the quotation look consistent.
Compare the offer, not just the standard number
The following is an original purchasing aid. It is not a list of mandatory IEC fields or a substitute for reading the applicable standards.
| Entry in the offer | What the buyer needs to identify | An unresolved answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| General luminaire safety reference | Exact part and edition claimed for the offered item | Only the family number IEC 60598 appears |
| Particular luminaire reference | The stated product type and the particular part used, where relevant | A floodlight description with no explanation of the particular reference |
| Supplied configuration | The variant and configuration description to which the claim refers | One family name covers several options without identifying this offer |
| Supporting assessment | The report identifier and the item/configuration it describes | An uncompleted form or an attachment that cannot be tied to the quotation |
| Open clarification | Who will explain the missing relationship before acceptance | A repeated compliance statement without answering the specific mismatch |
Avoid turning these entries into five automatic ticks. An answer can be complete in one respect and unresolved in another. For example, a report may clearly identify the standard references while the quotation still leaves the supplied option unspecified. That is a configuration question, not necessarily a problem with the report itself.
A quotation example with a useful stopping point
Imagine two hypothetical floodlight offers. Offer A names a luminaire family and a general standard. Offer B identifies a variant and links its general and particular references to a report. Neither has yet explained whether the mounting option in the quotation is the one described by its supporting documents.
The next useful question is not simply which offer has more attachments. Ask each supplier to identify the offered option and show how it relates to the documented item. Do not assume that a different bracket, cover or driver designation is covered, and do not assume that every difference necessarily invalidates an assessment. The relationship needs an answer from the responsible party.
Once that relationship is explained, retain the clarification with the quotation revision it answers. If an option changes later, reopen the affected question instead of copying the earlier review result onto a different configuration. This is a document-control decision for procurement, not an instruction to modify a luminaire or determine its technical safety.
The example is editorial and does not describe a customer order, test or project undertaken by MMAIATEX.
Keep separate questions visible
A luminaire-safety reference alone does not settle a hazardous-area selection. IEC 60079-0:2026 addresses general construction, testing and marking requirements for Ex equipment and components. The destination, intended installation and exact product documents still need their own competent review. This article does not claim either standard is a universal approval route.
If the uncertainty concerns the assessment scheme rather than the luminaire reference, use our separate IECEE CB versus IECEx evidence guide. If the question is about an EU harmonised citation, use the citation and edition guide. Those are different questions; neither should be answered by comparing publication years alone.
Current MMAIATEX certification status
MMAIATEX is the public brand of MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. As reviewed on October 22, 2026, the company's About page describes ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification as in progress. This is an attributed website statement, not independent certificate verification. No certification, test result or approved configuration for a pictured or listed product is established here.
Source and safety boundary
The linked IEC catalogue descriptions identify publication scopes and dates. They are not the complete standards or a model-specific assessment. The comparison table and hypothetical example are original editorial purchasing guidance. Qualified parties must determine the applicable requirements and suitability for the actual project. Do not use this article as installation, modification, energisation or legal approval instructions.
