Ex Equipment Mounting Orientation: 12 Buyer Check FAQs

Ex equipment mounting orientation: separate three records

A buyer's useful task is to make the proposed position reviewable. Keep the equipment reference, document revision and intended arrangement together. This FAQ concerns that evidence trail, not installation instructions or a universal list of permitted angles.

Record What it can show What still needs checking
Product photograph Appearance and an illustrated position Whether the exact variant permits that position
Equipment instructions Manufacturer-defined mounting information Applicability to the supplied configuration
Project installation drawing The proposed physical arrangement Agreement with applicable equipment limits and site requirements

These records complement one another. The table does not rank an attractive drawing above a restrictive equipment instruction.

1. Can every Ex enclosure be mounted horizontally or vertically?

No blanket permission should be assumed. Ask which positions are covered by the exact equipment documentation. A family may contain variants with different arrangements, so a statement about the range is not necessarily an answer for the quoted item. Record the proposed position on the drawing and keep it open for review until the relevant evidence is available.

2. Does a catalogue photograph prove the permitted position?

No. It illustrates the product, not the complete installation conditions. A photograph may show a display arrangement, a different variant or only one side of an assembly. Ask for the instruction or drawing reference that supports the intended position. Do not turn the image itself into an acceptance record or infer unseen mounting details from its perspective.

3. Is the certificate enough without the instructions?

Do not assume it is. Request both the applicable certification information and the manufacturer's installation instructions. The IECEx 2024 installation presentation discusses manufacturer instructions and documents for specific conditions of use. It is educational material, with draft-numbering caveats, not a substitute for the applicable standard. Our X and U suffix guide explains that separate document distinction.

4. What if the manual does not mention orientation?

Ask the manufacturer for a written clarification tied to the exact reference and proposed arrangement. Absence of a restriction in an extract is not proof that the complete documents contain none. Check that all referenced drawings and instructions were supplied. If the answer depends on a certificate's meaning, involve the issuing body rather than resolving the uncertainty through purchasing assumptions.

5. Can I rotate equipment to make the cable route easier?

Treat the rotated position as a proposal needing review, not an automatically equivalent layout. Send the reviewer the equipment view, entry locations and intended cable approach so the question is explicit. This FAQ does not approve rotation, additional holes or alteration of an enclosure. Use the separate enclosure modification FAQ when the proposal changes the hardware itself.

6. Why include nearby equipment in the drawing?

It helps the responsible designer understand the actual arrangement instead of reviewing an isolated product outline. Identify nearby heat sources, covers and access restrictions as project information, without inventing clearance requirements. Any required spacing must come from applicable documents and competent design. For the temperature terminology, see temperature class versus ambient temperature; neither term supplies a universal mounting clearance.

7. What if the equipment includes a drain or breather?

Include that accessory and its proposed position in the review. Ask whether its own instructions and the assembly documentation impose location or orientation conditions. Do not assume that rotating the complete enclosure leaves every accessory's function unchanged. The buyer's record should identify the arrangement being assessed, not suggest moving, adding or removing an accessory to solve a perceived drainage problem.

8. Are mounting brackets interchangeable if the holes line up?

Hole alignment alone does not establish documented suitability. Request the bracket or support reference specified for the proposed configuration, and identify any substitution before the order is accepted. The responsible reviewer needs to resolve mounting support and equipment requirements together. This FAQ gives no load rating, bolt size, tightening value or permission to fabricate a replacement support from an image.

9. Should maintenance access be considered before ordering?

Yes. Show how the proposed position relates to identification, inspection and the manufacturer's described maintenance access. The purpose is to expose an access question early, not to instruct someone to open installed equipment. HSE's guidance emphasizes inspection, maintenance and competent personnel in potentially explosive atmospheres. A purchase drawing should support those responsibilities, not attempt to replace them.

10. What should the supplier's confirmation identify?

A useful response identifies the exact equipment reference, the proposed drawing and revision, the relevant instruction, and any remaining qualifications. Ask a focused question such as whether the position in the attached view is covered by those documents. A generic reply saying the range is suitable for hazardous areas leaves the orientation question unanswered. Keep the response with the reviewed drawing.

11. What if the delivered mounting arrangement differs?

Record the discrepancy and keep the installation acceptance question unresolved while the responsible parties assess it. Distinguish a different supplied bracket, a changed equipment variant and a revised project drawing; each changes the evidence question in a different way. Do not silently revise the original record to make the delivery appear compliant, and do not use trial fitting as proof of approval.

12. Who should resolve an outstanding orientation question?

The manufacturer should clarify its equipment instructions, with the competent project team assessing the installation. The IECEx equipment FAQ identifies the manufacturer as the initial product contact and the issuing ExCB for certificate-specific questions. Procurement can coordinate that exchange, but a sales reply or this article does not independently authorize an installed arrangement.

Source note and review limits

IEC 60079-14:2024, Edition 6.0 published August 30, 2024, includes electrical installation design, selection, installation and initial inspection within its scope, including documentation and personnel competency. Its public catalogue record was checked on the review date. It does not provide a model-specific answer through its abstract. The suggested purchasing records above are editorial guidance, not quoted normative forms or installation approval.

Current MMAIATEX certification status

MMAIATEX is the public brand of MMAIATEX Explosion-proof Technology (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. The company's current About page describes ATEX, IECEx and CCC certification as in progress. This is an attributed website statement, not independent confirmation of a particular certificate. No mounting position, product image or general brand statement in this guide establishes a model's certification scope.

Safety and legal disclaimer

This FAQ is purchasing information, not engineering approval or permission to install, rotate, open or modify equipment. Follow applicable destination requirements, exact equipment instructions and competent site procedures. Do not proceed with work on the assumption that an unanswered orientation question is a minor drawing issue.

Contact MMAIATEX about mounting documentation

For an equipment enquiry, provide the proposed model or reference, destination, drawing revision and a clearly marked view of the intended position. Identify the documentation question that needs an answer, including any proposed accessory or support change. Ask what evidence is available for the specific arrangement.
