IEC TS 60079-40 process seals: what the specification covers

The IEC Webstore identifies IEC TS 60079-40:2015 as the first edition technical specification, published February 5, 2015, with a displayed stability date of 2028. Its subject is not every seal in an industrial installation. The scope is the possible migration path from a flammable process fluid into an electrical system and the process-sealing equipment intended to control that path.

The public abstract names three equipment arrangements:

  • A single process seal arrangement
  • A dual process seal arrangement
  • An add-on secondary process seal arrangement

Those labels describe the scope categories. They do not, by themselves, tell a buyer which arrangement is suitable for a particular fluid, pressure, temperature, electrical interface or failure consequence. The detailed requirements are in the licensed specification and the controlled technical documents for the exact equipment.

Why migration into wiring matters

If a process connection or barrier fails, a flammable fluid may travel through an electrical interface and into premises wiring. That possible path is different from a cable entering an enclosure from the surrounding hazardous area. The buyer should first draw the process boundary, the electrical boundary and the credible migration path. Then identify where the process seal is located, which side contains the fluid, what happens on failure and which downstream equipment could be exposed.

This is a design question, not a label-matching exercise. A catalogue phrase such as process seal, barrier or explosion-proof does not disclose the exact construction, test basis or application limits. Ask for the equipment identity, controlled drawing, materials, process connection, electrical connection, operating envelope, installation instructions and evaluation or test evidence that belongs to the identified model.

What the specification does not cover

The IEC abstract expressly excludes conduit sealing devices, cable glands and other wiring sealing methods addressed in the IEC 60079 series or other standards. A process seal should not be substituted casually for a cable gland, conduit seal or enclosure entry seal. Conversely, a cable gland selected for hazardous-area wiring does not automatically establish the process-seal function described by IEC TS 60079-40.

The specification also says that basic electrical safety and explosion protection are not addressed, although they may apply to the equipment under investigation. Leakage effects on the environment are outside its scope. Buyers must therefore coordinate process safety, electrical safety, hazardous-area classification, containment, environmental controls and emergency arrangements under the applicable legal and engineering framework.

Buyer checks before comparing offers

1. Freeze the application

Record the process fluid, composition, pressure, temperature, phase, connection size, electrical system, installation location, hazardous-area classification, expected service life and failure consequences. If the fluid can change, record the allowed range and the change-control process. Do not infer compatibility from a generic chemical name or from an enclosure marking.

2. Identify the seal arrangement

Ask whether the offer is a single process seal, dual process seal or add-on secondary process seal within the specification's intended scope. Request a drawing that identifies the barrier, interfaces, vents or monitoring features if applicable, materials and direction of process exposure. A second seal is not automatically independent, redundant or suitable for every consequence. Those conclusions require the exact design evidence.

3. Separate process evidence from Ex evidence

Request the process-seal evaluation or test record and the equipment's applicable electrical and explosion-protection documents as separate evidence sets. The IEC 60079 series includes general equipment requirements and installation standards, but an IEC standard reference is not a certificate for a model. The current IEC 60079 series listing shows that Part 40 sits alongside other parts with different subjects.

4. Check the installation interface

Installation instructions should identify connection preparation, orientation, tightening, materials, limits and inspection points. 5. Check the wiring method separately

If a cable gland, conduit or conduit sealing device is present, review it under its own applicable standard and certificate scope. Do not combine separate documents into a broader approval than their wording supports.

6. Verify identity and status

Match the certificate or report to the exact legal manufacturer, model, variant, process connection, electrical interface, revision, conditions and destination market. A test report, evaluation, declaration or component document is not interchangeable with a current certificate for a complete assembly.

Failure, inspection and change control

The buyer should define what happens if the process seal leaks, loses integrity, reaches a limit or is replaced. The procedure may involve isolation, depressurisation, detection, inspection, repair or replacement, but the exact response belongs to the process owner and competent engineering team. Keep records of seal identity, installation, inspections, test results, maintenance, changed process conditions and any deviation from the controlled configuration.

Do not drill, tap, add or relocate a seal on certified equipment from generic web guidance. A design change can alter process containment, electrical safety, explosion protection and certificate scope at the same time. Return to the manufacturer, certificate holder, engineering authority and applicable standards before changing the arrangement.

Buyers must verify exact-model documents, current status, conditions, controlled instructions, destination requirements and site conditions.
