Ex nR Restricted Breathing: Scope and Buyer Check Guide

Last reviewed: September 23, 2026

Ex nR restricted breathing and the current IEC scope

The official IEC 60079-15:2017 catalogue reviewed on this date lists Edition 5.0, published December 8, 2017, with stability date 2027. Its scope includes nR enclosures for Group II electrical equipment used in explosive gas atmospheres. The same publication also covers specified nC devices. It is not solely an nR document.

The catalogue gives a rated input voltage scope ceiling of 15 kV AC or DC and explains its relationship with IEC 60079-0. That ceiling is not the operating rating of any particular product. Check the offered equipment's actual rating and assessment basis. A catalogue entry explains a standard's scope; it does not certify a unit or resolve local legal acceptance.

A stability date is a standards maintenance planning field. It is not an expiry date for product evidence. Verify the current publication and the edition identified in the equipment documents when making the purchase decision.

Separate the marking from other enclosure information

A technical offer can contain a protection marking, an IP rating, a material description and a product photograph. These answer different questions. Place them in separate fields in the review record so that a persuasive photograph or familiar enclosure material does not stand in for missing Ex evidence.

Information supplied What the buyer should check What it does not establish alone
Complete Ex marking Exact protection designation and other marked limits Suitability for every hazardous location
Model and configuration Suffixes, accessories and document references Coverage of an unlisted variation
IP rating Declared environmental protection for that arrangement Restricted-breathing Ex conformity
Certificate or other applicable evidence Exact scope, current record and conditions Approval of unrelated equipment
Installation and maintenance instructions Controlled version for the delivered item Permission to improvise a modification

The MMAIATEX IP rating guide explains the environmental protection distinction. For the rest of the nameplate, use the Ex marking guide. Read the complete marking rather than treating nR as the entire selection decision.

Build the enquiry around a controlled configuration

Ask the supplier to identify the complete equipment being offered, including the enclosure arrangement, fitted entries and accessories. Specify whether the enquiry concerns a finished item, a spare part or an enclosure awaiting further integration. These are different deliverables and require different evidence questions.

Give the supplier the project's destination, hazardous-area classification, required protection level and environmental conditions. Include the electrical duty and access or maintenance constraints. Do not ask the supplier to infer those requirements from a plant name or a photograph of the old equipment.

Record unresolved requirements before comparing price. If the responsible site engineer has not confirmed the required protection level, note that selection remains incomplete. Commercial shorthand such as Zone equipment is not a substitute for a documented technical requirement.

Review interfaces as part of the offered arrangement

For a useful purchasing review, request a drawing or schedule that identifies cable entries, closure elements, seals, covers and other relevant interfaces. Match each proposed accessory to the manufacturer's instructions and the equipment evidence. Do not assume that two individually documented items form an acceptable combination.

Thread compatibility is one part of the interface review, not the whole decision. An accessory might physically fit while its documented use, sealing arrangement or environmental conditions do not match the proposed application. Ask for a written explanation when the quotation and the instructions describe different arrangements.

The existing cable entry compatibility guide covers thread identification in more detail. This article's purpose is to keep the complete nR configuration and its supporting documents connected throughout purchasing and handover.

Agree installation evidence before the item arrives

The current IEC 60079-14:2024 catalogue describes design, equipment selection, installation and initial inspection requirements, including documentation and personnel competence. It lists Edition 6.0, published August 30, 2024. That installation role is separate from the construction and marking scope of Part 15.

A practical handover plan identifies who will review the manufacturer's instructions, resolve installation questions and retain the initial inspection record. The buyer should ask for the documents early enough for the installation team to review them before delivery commitments become difficult to change.

Do not invent a universal sealing method, test pressure, test duration or acceptance value from a short online description. If a specified verification method applies to the exact equipment, obtain the controlled procedure, required competence and acceptance criteria from the applicable documents. Any uncertainty belongs with the responsible manufacturer and qualified engineering team.

Make the maintenance handover specific

The official IEC 60079-17:2023 entry lists Edition 6.0, published December 1, 2023. It covers inspection and maintenance of electrical installations designed for hazardous areas. Its public scope excludes equipment verification and repair, overhaul and reclamation of explosion-protected equipment. The catalogue currently displays stability date 2026; that does not itself mean the publication is withdrawn.

For the maintenance file, ask which activities may be performed under the supplied instructions, which replacement parts are specified, and what checks are required before return to service. Keep those answers connected to the exact product revision. A general plant work instruction should not silently replace equipment-specific information.

If a cover, entry or accessory is changed, preserve the record of the original configuration and the proposed change. Seek the required technical disposition before proceeding. Where damage or an undocumented alteration is found, the appropriate next step is qualified assessment, not an improvised seal or a guessed tightening value.

A short acceptance checklist for buyers

  1. The purchase order and equipment evidence identify the same model and configuration.
  2. The complete marking and limitations have been compared with the documented project requirement.
  3. Entry accessories and other relevant interfaces are identified in controlled documents.
  4. Installation instructions are available to the responsible installer before work begins.
  5. Required inspections and any equipment-specific checks have an assigned competent owner.
  6. Spare-part and maintenance instructions are available for the actual delivered revision.
  7. Deviations have written dispositions rather than informal assurances.

These are recommended evidence checks. They do not prescribe a test or declare the equipment suitable. Keep unresolved items visible until the responsible parties provide a documented decision.
